The common, most- aggressive species of termite here on the gold coast (Coptotermes acinaciformis) often build there nests inside large gum trees. There is rarely much evidence on the outside of the tree but it’s not until you drill a hole into the tree’s centre, are you able to determine if a nest resides there or not.
Here is the inside of a recently cut down gum tree which houses a large colony of “Copto’s”. You can see all the termite galleries and how there would possibly be no evidence of this nest from the outside of the tree when it was originally standing.
It is very common to have these extremely problematic termites for home owners nesting in these trees and doing unknown potentially extensive damage to their homes.
So, if you have gum tree’s on your property or have them nearby your home, it’s certainly best to have a termite inspection and treatment of your home to protect against these ruthless critters.
